About this contract
The Girls Education Challenge programme is an important element of this effort. It is working to provide quality education for up to 1.5 million and highly marginalised girls. Designed as a 'challenge fund', the GEC aims to find better ways of getting girls into school and ensuring they receive a quality education and learn whilst they are there. GEC projects are designed to tackle a range of barriers that prevent girls from benefiting from education. This includes contributing to more gender inclusive education systems and schools; improving teaching quality; providing tailored education support such as mentoring and bursaries; and tackling harmful social norms that prevent girls from going to school. Under phase 2b, the role of the Supplier, operating as a Fund Manager, will be wide ranging and complex, encompassing portfolio and project management and oversight; proactive risk management including in Fragile and Conflict Affected States (FCAS); results and knowledge management and dissemination; and supporting DFID to engage with new donors to expand the programme's reach. The new contract is expected to start by February 2020 and will include a five-month handover with the current fund management consortium. The programme is currently predominantly funded by DFID, with additional funding provided by USAID for project activities in Afghanistan and Somalia.
