About this contract
The main purpose of Health Education England (HEE) is to improve the quality of healthcare for the people and patients of England through the education, training and lifelong development of NHS staff. There are over 300 different jobs performed by more than one million people in the NHS, and they all have contact with HEE initiatives. Our organisational vision is to ensure that the NHS has the right professionals, with the right skills and values, in the right place, at the right time, to better meet the needs and wants of patients. HEE has 7 local offices responsible for the training and education of NHS staff within their area. It also has a role nationally working with the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and other health arms-length bodies and non-departmental public bodies. Genomics Education Programme The Genomics Education Programme (GEP) was established in 2014 following an initial investment from the DHSC to pump prime genomic education and training activity to support the delivery of the 100,000 Genomes Project. At the beginning of financial year 2018/19 the GEP became part of business as usual within HEE and in collaboration with NHS England (NHSE) continues to support the newly launched NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS). As part of the GMS, new patient pathways are being identified and developed. The GEP has a role in developing education and training initiatives to underpin delivery of the service, including informing the content of professional curricula and creating a programme of resources and CPD opportunities to support the upskilling of both the prospective and current workforce in genomics. To achieve these aims the GEP works closely with a number of partners, stakeholder networks and communities of practice who provide expertise and also aid spread and adoption within healthcare.
