About this contract
1. Sutton Council invites contractors to submit their tender to implement the Market Place Sutton, previously called Sutton Northern Gateway, (‘the Project’) in accordance with the attached brief. 1.1. Sutton Council has committed to visually uplift one of the key shopping areas in Sutton. Two parades have been targeted for works to develop a unique and attractive urban environment at nos. 208-230 & 200-214 Sutton High Street. In addition to this, an additional shop front at 217a and a gable wall art at 260 Sutton High Street have also been identified to uplift the area's environment. 1.2. The parade of shops to be tackled is characterised by a range of independent businesses comprising a Cafe, a Cobblers and Key Cutters, an Eel and Pie Shop, a Barbers, and a Herbal Remedy and Acupuncture Clinic. Works are envisaged to a total no. of 15 properties including the Gable Wall Art. 1.3. Nos. 217a, 208-230, 200-214 & 260 Sutton High Street feature three storey buildings with commercial ground floor units. No. 260 comprises a gable wall that faces Marshall's Road for which the Council intends to procure an artist to paint a mural. No. 200 Sutton High Street comprises a side elevation that faces Benhill Avenue. 1.4. The proposal aims to celebrate the diversity and individuality of the independent businesses which characterise the parade, while at the same time restoring order, scale, proportion and materiality in keeping with the historic design intention of the buildings. 1.5. The objectives are being achieved through wide-ranging improvements to shop frontages, building facades, signs, awnings, stall risers, doors, the repair and re-instatement of architectural features such as pilasters and window surrounds.
