About this contract
Westminster City Council is the local authority serving the heart of London. The City of Westminster stretches from Pimlico and Victoria in the south through the West End, Marylebone and Bayswater to Paddington and Queen's Park in the north-west. It includes the capital's principal areas of government, shopping, entertainment and tourism and the headquarters of innumerable commercial and professional organisations together with extensive residential areas of all types. The resident population currently stands at approximately 234,000 but it is estimated that more than 1 million people set foot in Westminster at some time during the day. The contract involves the management and maintenance of 52 parks, gardens and open spaces, 3 cemeteries (located outside Westminster) and XX other ‘green spaces’; predominantly highways planting schemes. The portfolio includes some of the most high profile and busiest gardens in the United Kingdom including Leicester Square, Berkeley Square and the Victoria Embankment Gardens. Consequently, these prestige sites must be maintained to the highest possible standard. Westminster has a record of consistently achieving awards for its parks and gardens, regionally, nationally and internationally which must be maintained. In addition to any implied standard in this Specification all works will conform to recognised horticultural standards or accepted horticultural norms.
