HDUHB are looking to introduce recycling of absorbent hygiene product waste (“AHP”) which is currently going to landfill via the tiger stripe waste stream. Tiger stripe waste is for the capture of offensive waste. HDUHB’s tiger stripe waste stream currently disposes offensive waste (inc. sanitary/nappy waste) and waste arising from the treatment of non-infectious patients, possibly containing bodily fluids, for example: - PPE (gloves, masks aprons) - Wipes, dressings, plasters and bandages – non-infectious - Incontinence waste – non-infectious - Soiled sanitary towels and tampons – from public and work-based female toilets - Nappies – from baby changing areas and nurseries. - IVs for glucose / stoma bags The waste which is collected in a tiger stripe bag is being sent to deep landfill sites. HDUHB are looking to roll this out on an incremental basis across all acute sites within the HDUHB remit as part of the Health Board’s Waste Strategy to reduce carbon from waste disposal activities.
