About this contract
A targeted amount of archaeological work consisting of open-area excavation within a specified area is proposed to investigate the development and constructional history of the Inner Bailey gatehouse at Pontefract Castle, and to inform its interpretation and display. This brief deals with the proposed excavation, with the preparation of the post-excavation analysis and assessment of the results of the excavation, and with the preparation of a report on the work on the site and the deposition of the archive. The tendering archaeological contractor is requested to submit a project design in response to this brief in accordance with MoRPHE (2015). It is expected that the tendering contractor will detail in their tender how they will maximise opportunities for publicising the project (including on-line) provide on-site interpretation during the course of the excavation, and how they will work with and engage local community groups, the visiting public & the people of Pontefract. The excavation is intended to result in drawings and information that will feed into a separate long-term Interpretation Plan for the castle, but producing the interpretation material for the long-term interpretation of the gatehouse & castle is not within the scope of this project.
