About this contract
Design Codes are planning tools which provide detailed advice and guidance in the design of new development. The Codes, are prescriptive in that they describe 'design requirements' (sometimes referred to as 'rules') that development should adhere too. This ranges from general guidance - how buildings should connect to streetscapes and roadways, and open space provision, for example - through to requirements for built form, i.e. the scale and form of buildings that are permitted as well as the materials used. The over-arching aim of this project is to understand how the historic environment has been reflected in Design Codes, drawing conclusions from examples of good and bad practice, and to develop a Design Code for the historic environment.
